School Approach

We are a trauma-informed training school integrating classical yoga, yoga philosophy, and Ayurveda, with the contemporary and compatible sciences of interpersonal neurobiology, mindfulness, inner community parts, art therapy, and trauma resilience.

Our guest presenters include Sarahjoy's teachers from India who bring their expertise and depth to the course. We also include guest presenters with expertise in yoga for diabetes, the endocrine system, cancer, Ayurveda, trauma-informed approaches to healing, addiction recovery, and more.

Sarahjoy is dedicated to seva, service, and has been teaching yoga programs, including 200hr yoga teacher trainings, in Oregon's prisons since 1998. As such, this program also has an inherent focus on yoga, social justice, and putting wisdom into action.

Development Through Three Phases

PHASE ONE of this training program focuses on the Tapas phase of a yogic journey: cultivating the mind-body disciplines that lead to a more stable sense of well-being. Here we focus on the physical health, structural health, musculo-skeletal health tools of yoga asana including the practice of physical asana for rehabilitation, injury prevention or recovery, adaptive and medically-sensitive yoga, and Ayurvedic approaches to restorative yoga that brings overall restoration of the vital body.

We also include a focus on the yogic principle of personal sadhana and the Ayurvedic principles of dinacharya: it is essential that as yoga therapy providers we have our daily practice and live a lifestyle that is conducive to being present for the challenges and celebrations that our students and clients will experience in their lives.

PHASE TWO of this training focuses on mental health, emotional, psychological, spiritual, intrapersonal and interpersonal vitality; a deeper exploration of incorporating Ayurveda into your practice with students or clients; yoga philosophy and psychology; the development of authenticity, resilience, intra-personal and inter-personal skills for being genuinely present and compassionate with your students and clients.

PHASE THREE of this training brings in the deeper studies, specialized modules, and mentored practicum. The Science of the Breath and the Art of Yoga Therapy; The Chakras and Developmental Yoga and Western Psychology; Compassionate Approaches to Yoga Therapy with lessons from the Internal Family Systems Model; the study of Chronic Pain and Brain-Based Approaches to Yoga Therapy; Yoga and Expressive Arts Therapy; Endocrine, Digestive and Immune Health; Attachment Theory and Implicit Memory in Yoga Therapy; Yoga for Cancer; and Yoga, Biofeedback + Mind-Body Medicine; Kriya Yoga Model for Addiction Recovery, and The Business of Yoga: Collaboration, Referrals and Innovation in the Health Care Industry.
