Integrating Art Therapy Techniques with Yoga Therapy Art therapy techniques elicit right-brain access that can help clients / students to drop into their somatic experience more effectively as they bypass left-brain modes of intellectualization. Art therapy is widely used in treatment centers for trauma, anxiety, depression and addiction.
Art is an essential component of the yoga tradition as seen in Yantras and Mandalas.
Based on a form of art therapy classified as Process-Oriented (versus Product-Oriented) this training module will give an overview of art therapy, introduce art therapy tools that can easily be integrated into yoga therapy sessions to help clients connect to skills of improvisation, intuition, relaxing into “not-knowing-mode”, connecting to the inner world of their emotions as felt through the medium of art activities, and to help clients access their inner knowing.
The art therapy activities that will be used are all directly related to yogic philosophy and psychology including the teachings on the innermost Self; the Seer, the Seeing and the Seen; the model of the koshas for understanding trauma resolution; the system of the chakras; lessening the coloring of thought (Yoga Sutras); and the development of a personal yantra and a personal mandala, both as tools for svadhyaya and isvari-pranidhana.
